A special role in the history of Belarusian theatre is played by the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus. The theatre got its beginning in the 1920s on the stage of the first State Drama Theatre which knitted opera and ballet companies, chorus, and a small symphony orchestra. Various musicals and drama performances, fragments from operas and ballets were put on stage. The State Opera and Ballet Studio, opened in 1930 and headed by Anton Bonachich, an outstanding Russian singer, was entrusted with the duty of training artists for the theatre.

During the 80 years of performance, The National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre staged both world-famous masterpieces of European and Russian composers and national repertoire artworks: Boris Godunov by Modest Mussorgsky, Otello by Giuseppe Verdi, Jacques Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann, Sadko and The Golden Cockerel by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Lohengrin by Richard Wagner, Vitovt by Vyacheslav Kuznetsov, The Grey Legend by Dmitry Smolsky.

Sure, apart from fruitful and active periods Opera and Ballet Theatre has also gone through hard times. So were the years of the Great Patriotic War. Minsk was occupied by German invaders and was subjected to heavy bombing. A lot of artists joined troops and partisans, some were evacuated to Russian cities in the Volga region. But a part of the theatre’s staff continued their work.
